That reaction to a family member may have driven an important personality trait, and if they say "they don’t act like that to them! " then it could destroy the entire character if you hinge on that feeling. Especially if it’s something that could be read ambiguously, which means they can shove it in their pie hole in the most courteous way of saying so.
